Looking for a job while being over 50 years old is a pathetic thing to watch.  It was last spring and the memorable event of just another job interview wasn't much of a story to tell.  As a matter of course I wore my stiffly starched dress shirt and a nice tie but my coat was just a little glossy in the sun as it was about worn out so I left it in the car.

I remember driving by our church so I said a little prayer as I passed by because a church going man might expect a little help from above finding a new job.  It's sad to report but my idleness had been going on for almost two years and I was brushing with bankruptcy, the loss of our home so my faith kept me going but my pray had little enthusiasm.

The job interview was in a stuffy little office, painted hospital green about ten years ago and the metal chair squeaked like a mouse when I sat down.  You could hear all the sounds of the distribution center through the walls and it's a noise I miss because it meant people were working and moving merchandise to stores.  I had to fidget a little during the interview because the guy that interviewed me "Henry" was in a big hurry for some reason.  Like the last interview I kept talking and my new friend Henry kept writing. 

By sheer force I found all the fascinating gears of my old truck and made it home just in time for dinner.  Henry passionately told me they would call me and he really appreciated my time and he enjoyed meeting me.  Henry didn't look up but two times during the job interview, once to say hello and then to say good bye. He jumped up like he was spring loaded and dashed off toward the warehouse floor through the double doors after he handed me off to security at the front door.

I found things a lot better at home and my wife's twinkle in her eye and smile made me feel better, at least for a while.  Over the last several months it seems we've been living through a lot of necessary friction, most of it about money.

We agreed that friction was just a waste of good energy so we've been getting on a lot better and that particular night we got along pretty well.  She worked at the hospital part-time and she could tell some strange stories about her working life in a busy hospital.  Every once in a while we both smiled and laughed as it was like being on recess with your best friend.  There was no doubt that she was the heart of our home for me and our two children, it was me that let everybody down. 

My wife ran the house and paid all the bills and most of the time our home ran like a Swiss watch but a new mainspring was needed in the form of income.  Looking for a job while being over 50 years old is a pathetic thing to watch.  All my life my hardworking career had produced a great and above average income so my talents, skills and energies were efficient, well-organized and professional.  As a manager I found little attraction to lesser jobs but my efficient wife told me to "get over it!".

With natural pride he spoke about all his North American dealers and invited his readers to visit his various online pages and keep learning.  He was a Fortune 500 specialist that decided to open up his own consulting business for people that wanted a small business.  He described the income throttle being in my hands, not his.  Each man or women decided if he wanted to go ten miles an hour or a hundred miles per hour concerning income levels.  He was tooting his own whistle but the guy made a lot of money and now he was helping other people. 

He promised, adult to adult, not to disappoint anybody and made his offer free of charge, meaning free forever.  With enthusiasm and long hours during his career he had made good and offered to help any hard working man or woman start their own business.  He told me that the snow was not going to melt anytime soon describing the national economy but fortunes are being made at the same time.  He had something new and one morning he decided to quit his fortune 500 job and start his consulting business.  He never returned to one of the largest organizations in the world and his large salary and benefit package and it didn't take long for the breeze of self-employment profits kept him excited and busy at the same time.

He was busy, a little bit too busy, perhaps, so he reached out to other good people that could help him grow his business and just like a corn field for a country boy it grew faster and faster.

Cheerfully he was making money and started to expand briskly through the crowds of other companies in the market.  Over the years he had become a great vocational teacher and as a matter of fact he was simply a great business manager.  He had his independent career and even a larger income now so everything looked very different.  It wasn't about money any more in this tough economy he wanted to help his friends, family and business associates.

We had reasonable expenses and didn't waste money so the increase in income was the answer for my family.  I had almost every day available for the business adventure and we decided the flower shop would be our first paying customer.  The guys name was Greg and I looked him up on the internet when we got back from our walk.
